The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 in 12 innings on Tuesday night at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. The victory prevented a sweep and forces a fifth game in the World Series.
Tampa Bay fell behind 3-0 after losing the first two games in Milwaukee and dropping the opener at home. The Rays reversed the momentum with a late surge to keep their championship hopes alive.
This marks only the fifth time in 26 attempts that a team down 3-0 in the World Series has won the fourth game. The four previous teams all lost the subsequent contest.
Among 43 teams that have faced a 3-0 deficit in any seven-game postseason series, only the 2004 Boston Red Sox recovered to win the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees.
The win ends an eight-game winning streak for the Brewers. Milwaukee had been attempting to become the second team ever to sweep both a league championship series and the World Series.
Jacob Misiorowski, the National League favorite for the Cy Young Award, is scheduled to pitch for the Brewers in Game 5. The game begins at 8 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday at Tropicana Field.
