Julian Alvarez scored the winning goal for Atletico Madrid against Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday, ending a two-match scoring streak that helped his team close the gap to La Liga leaders Barcelona to two points. The performance offered a moment of reconciliation for the striker, who has faced frequent jeers from home crowds this season due to his public statements about wanting to play for his rivals.
The Spanish Football Federation fined Barcelona 602 euros, or $670, on Tuesday for violating Article 133 of its regulations. The penalty stems from a complaint filed by Atletico Madrid, which alleged that Barcelona approached Alvarez without sending prior written notification. Atletico also submitted a complaint to FIFA, but the international governing body ruled it had no jurisdiction over the dispute.
Alvarez acknowledged the friction with the Atletico fanbase during a post-match interview on Saturday. He admitted that his remarks during the 2026 World Cup, where he said he wanted to fulfill his dream of playing for Barcelona, triggered the conflict. "It was a mistake. I understand why the fans are angry. If I were a fan, I’d be angry, too. Especially given how they’ve supported me since I arrived," he said.
The striker’s comments had set off a transfer battle that lasted through the entire summer window. Although his contract with Atletico runs until June 2030, the incident strained his relationship with the Metropolitano faithful. Sections of the crowd gave him a standing ovation after his Saturday goal, signaling a potential shift in the atmosphere.
Alvarez joined Atletico from Manchester City in 2024 in a deal valued at up to 95 million euros. Since transferring, he has recorded 51 goals in 115 appearances for the Madrid side. Before that move, he scored 36 goals in 103 matches for Manchester City.
