Anthropic Backers Bank Billions Pre-IPO
Early investors in the AI giant are sitting on multi-billion dollar windfalls ahead of a potential $2 trillion public listing.

At a private market valuation of $965 billion, the stakes held by Anthropic’s early backers already total billions of dollars. The company is widely expected to go public later this year, potentially at a valuation of up to $2 trillion, which would further inflate these holdings. Even before the official IPO price is set, the current private valuation has already turned modest early checks into massive fortunes for venture capital firms and prominent individual investors.
The trajectory of Anthropic’s value has been steep since its inception. In 2021, the startup secured a Series A round at a valuation of just $461 million. By 2023, the Series C round valued the company at $5 billion. The growth accelerated rapidly in the following year, with valuations reaching $183 billion last year and climbing to $380 billion earlier this year. This rapid appreciation has created a significant wealth gap between those who entered at the earliest stages and those who joined later.
Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, exemplifies the return on early entry. He invested during the 2021 Series A when the company was worth $461 million. Today, his ownership stands at approximately 1% of the company. Based on the current $965 billion valuation, that stake is worth nearly $10 billion. This positions him as one of the wealthiest individuals in the AI sector prior to any public market listing.
Venture capital firms have also seen dramatic returns, though the magnitude varies based on entry timing. Spark Capital, the only VC firm known to hold a board seat, invested $75 million during the 2023 Series C. That position has ballooned more than ninetyfold, now valued at $7 billion. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D, has invested over $1 billion over time, resulting in a stake now worth $14 billion. Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary and Ashton Kutcher, contributed $35 million in 2023 and added another $400 million later, creating a stake worth billions today. Notably, Kutcher left Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch his own venture capital firm.
Later-stage investors have also captured significant value, though with lower multiples. Iconiq wrote a $6 billion check last year when Anthropic was valued at $183 billion. That investment is now worth $17 billion and could double if the company lists at the anticipated $2 trillion mark. More recently, Sequoia Capital invested $3 billion earlier this year at a $380 billion valuation. This purchase secured them about 1% ownership, meaning their investment has already more than doubled in value in a short period.
As the IPO approaches, these figures represent a baseline rather than a final outcome. The potential jump to a $2 trillion valuation suggests further gains for all listed stakeholders. The distribution of wealth among Anthropic’s backers highlights the high-risk, high-reward nature of investing in leading AI labs, where timing and entry price determine the ultimate financial outcome.
The upcoming public listing will likely be one of the largest technology debuts in recent history. For the investors named here, the process will convert private paper gains into liquid assets. Whether the final valuation reaches the predicted $2 trillion remains to be seen, but the billions already secured at the current private price point underscore the immense value of the AI sector in 2026.
