Robert John Crawford, 49, stood before a Brisbane supreme court jury on Monday, 26 October, and entered a not guilty plea to the murder of his wife, Frances Elizabeth Crawford.

Prosecutor Chris Cook alleged that Crawford killed his wife on 29 July 2024 during a period of severe marital strain. The body was found beside a ride-on lawnmower at the base of a retaining wall on the couple's rural property in Upper Lockyer, west of Toowoomba. Cook argued that the accused staged the scene to make the death appear accidental.

Justice Lincoln Crowley explained the prosecution's theory of the case to the court. They intend to argue that Frances Crawford died from either strangulation or blunt-force trauma. These specific medical claims form the core of the evidence the state will present during the trial.

Financial motives drive the prosecution's narrative. Cook told the jury that the marriage was nearing its end and that Crawford faced significant losses through a divorce settlement. The accused allegedly wanted to retain the family home and avoid splitting his superannuation with his wife. Cook described the accused as a 'love rat' who maintained a double life, presenting strong Christian values publicly while behaving differently in private.

Four women with whom Crawford allegedly had affairs are expected to provide testimony. The court heard that Frances Crawford was weighing whether to end the marriage or give her husband a final chance to prove his commitment to her and their children. She had established specific boundaries for the relationship. These conditions listed sexual or emotional infidelity, pornography, and masturbation as grounds for divorce.

The jury will travel to the Upper Lockyer property on Wednesday to view the location of the alleged killing. Justice Crowley stated that seeing the site would help the jurors understand the physical evidence presented in court. The defense has not yet delivered an opening statement.

The trial is scheduled to continue for the next three weeks. Prosecutors plan to call as many as 47 witnesses to the stand.
