Chris Brown received a suspended prison sentence on Monday for a violent incident at a London nightclub in 2023.

The 37-year-old singer was sentenced to eight months in custody, a term the judge suspended for one year. This ruling means Brown will not serve immediate prison time provided he meets specific conditions. He had pleaded guilty in July to affray, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison.

The incident occurred on the dance floor of Tape, a private club in the Mayfair district of London, in February 2023. Court video showed Brown striking former friend and music producer Abraham Diaw twice in the head with a tequila bottle. Security personnel had to physically separate the two men. Diaw was hospitalized with injuries to his head and knee.

Judge Tony Baumgartner presided over the sentencing at Southwark Crown Court. He noted that the repeated use of a glass bottle aimed at the head was plainly dangerous. The judge stated that the attack carried a risk of more serious injury than Diaw ultimately sustained. However, Baumgartner determined that Brown did not qualify for an immediate custodial sentence due to his guilty plea and several mitigating factors. These factors included stable employment and consistent charity work. The judge acknowledged Brown's previous convictions but noted he has maintained a clean record in recent years.

Prosecutors dropped additional charges of assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, and possessing an offensive weapon in exchange for the guilty plea. Brown's friend and vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu also pleaded guilty to affray and received a four-month suspended sentence. Affray is defined as the use or threat of unlawful violence that causes a person to fear for their safety.

The legal outcome follows a series of cancellations for the singer. Brown and Usher canceled a scheduled performance at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on October 17. Organizers also canceled concerts in several other U.S. cities, citing the health and well-being of the touring company. The tour is scheduled to resume on November 5 in Atlanta.

Prosecutor Heidi Stonecliffe argued that Brown played a leading role in the attack. She stated that by any circumstances, Brown moved first. Defense lawyer Sallie Bennett-Jenkins emphasized that the attack lasted no more than 20 seconds. She said Brown offered a profound apology to everyone present in the club that night. Bennett-Jenkins described the incident as ugly and unattractive but noted the quick resolution of the physical altercation.

Brown has faced legal trouble since his 2009 felony conviction for assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna. He was arrested in several U.S. states over altercations but was often not charged or had charges dropped. In 2019, he was arrested in Paris on suspicion of rape but released without charge. Brown left the United Kingdom after the 2023 brawl but was arrested in May 2025 at a Manchester hotel following a concert. He had been free on a bail of 5 million pounds, which allowed him to tour Europe and North America over the past two summers.

Fans greeted Brown outside the courthouse after the sentencing. Some traveled from Italy and the Netherlands to see him. Brown wore a black mask, dark glasses, and a black leather jacket. He blew a kiss to one fan and signed an autograph for another. A lone voice shouted at him during his morning arrival, asking when he would learn that violence is not okay. Brown rose to stardom in 2005 and won his first Grammy for best R&B album in 2011. He earned a second Grammy in the same category in 2025.
