The 2026 Ballon d'Or winner will be named at the London Palladium.
Three players are in the final stretch for football's top individual honor. Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappe, and Harry Kane represent distinct arguments for the prize. The award will be announced less than 24 hours before the article's publication date.
Prediction markets show a stark divergence in sentiment. Bookmakers list Kane as the overwhelming favorite, with odds around 70 percent. In contrast, Avisia, a French data firm, rates Yamal as the statistical leader with a 23 percent probability. Kane follows at 21 percent, while Mbappe sits at 19 percent, tied with 2024 winner Rodri. Messi holds an 18 percent chance for a ninth title. Avisia claims it correctly predicted the top five for the previous year's award.
Supporters among players are divided. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone argues that Messi deserves the trophy after his recent retirement from international duty. Jude Bellingham backs Kane, citing the England captain's work ethic. Anthony Gordon supports Yamal, describing his Barcelona teammate as playing on another level. Aurelien Tchouameni favors Mbappe, calling the Frenchman's season incredible.
Individual statistics provide strong evidence for Mbappe and Kane. Mbappe finished as La Liga's top scorer with 25 goals and led the Champions League with 15. He also recorded 12 goals at the World Cup, setting a tournament record. Kane scored 73 goals last season, the highest total for any player since Messi's 82-goal campaign in 2011-12.
Team success adds complexity to the statistical picture. Mbappe did not win a major trophy with club or country. Kane won the Bundesliga but finished third at the World Cup with England. Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona, despite injury issues affecting his personal numbers.
Only four of the last 19 winners failed to capture the Champions League, World Cup, European Championship, or Copa America. Yamal is the only finalist with both a World Cup and a league title this season. A victory for the 19-year-old would make him the youngest recipient in the award's history, surpassing the record set by Brazil's Ronaldo in 1997.
