Three people were transported to a hospital after a two-alarm fire consumed a home in Dorchester, Massachusetts, on Saturday morning.
The Boston Fire Department arrived at the residence on Kerwin Street shortly before 8 a.m. Resident Kevaugh Davis stated that his son woke him after spotting smoke. Davis described opening his mother’s door to find her mattress fully engulfed in flames. He called 911 and alerted neighbors on the upper floors before the fire reached all three levels of the building and the adjacent structure.
The timing of the initial 911 call coincided with a shift change for fire crews. This overlap allowed for a double response. District Fire Chief Harry Brienza noted that many off-duty firefighters arrived to assist. They used ground ladders to rescue eight people from the rear of the building.
The department confirmed that eight adults and three children were displaced from the home. All three hospitalized individuals are expected to make a full recovery. The Red Cross is currently providing assistance to those displaced.
Dana Voronina, who lives across the street, described the scene as frightening. She stated, “I've never seen something awful that close. I pray for the people that managed to get out of the building and I hope everybody's safe.” Davis added, “You can always buy everything back. It's not that big of a deal. Just happy that we made it.” The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
