Powerball Winner Faces $716 Million Tag, $307 Million Reality
Federal and state taxes will reduce the estimated jackpot to between $164 million and $193 million in cash.

The estimated $716 million Powerball jackpot will be drawn at 10:59 p.m. Wednesday. While that headline figure captures public attention, the amount deposited into a winner’s bank account will be considerably lower. The final cash payout depends on whether the winner selects the annuity or the lump sum, and where the winning ticket was purchased.
The $716 million figure represents the annuity option, which pays out 30 annual installments averaging $23,866,667. Most winners choose the cash option instead. For this drawing, the lump-sum cash value is $307.2 million. This amount is the starting point for tax calculations, not the final take-home figure.
Lottery winnings are treated as ordinary income by the Internal Revenue Service. A prize of this size places the winner in the highest federal tax bracket for 2026. The IRS mandates an immediate 24% withholding on prizes over $5,000. On the $307.2 million cash prize, this automatic deduction removes $73,728,000. The winner will then owe the remaining 13% difference at tax season, amounting to an additional $39,891,957. After all federal obligations are met, the cash prize drops to $193,580,043.
State taxes further reduce the total. Rates on lottery prizes vary by state, ranging from 0% to 10.9%. Nine states have no personal income tax, and California exempts lottery winnings from state taxes. A winner in Florida, Texas, or California would keep the full federal-net amount of $193,580,043. In high-tax jurisdictions, the reduction is steeper. New York levies the highest rate at 10.9%. A winner in Maryland faces a 9.5% rate, which lowers the final cash take-home to $164,396,043.
The specific state of purchase determines the exact final figure. If no ticket matches the winning numbers on Wednesday, the jackpot will increase for Saturday's drawing. The estimated range for a cash winner stands between $164.3 million and $193.5 million, depending on the location of the winning ticket.
