The lead of the AFC West shifts hands Sunday at 4:25 p.m. EST when the 5-1 Kansas City Chiefs visit the 5-2 Denver Broncos. The contest serves as the primary arbiter for the division title, as both teams sit within a half-game of one another at the top of the standings.
The path to this weekend began with a 31-10 loss for Denver at Arrowhead Stadium on September 14. That defeat marked the first meeting between the rivals this season and set the stage for a rebound. Denver has won two of its last three games, including a 30-16 victory over Arizona last week. Kansas City remains unbeaten in its last four games but suffered a 20-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in its most recent outing.
Quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Bo Nix enter the game as their teams' least consistent performers. Mahomes has gone two consecutive games without a touchdown pass, a first in his career. His rushing average has dropped to 3.7 yards per attempt, the lowest since he became the Chiefs starter in 2018. Nix faces similar hurdles, posting a 59.2% completion rate, the lowest of his three-year career. He is on pace to rush for 267 yards, well below his 393-yard average from his first two seasons.
Supporting casts have carried the burden for both franchises. Kenneth Walker III, the reigning Super Bowl MVP, averages 117 rushing yards per game for Kansas City. Travis Kelce, who turned 37 a few weeks ago, is averaging 14.3 yards per catch, the best mark of his 14-year career. On the other side, Vance Joseph's defense has maintained its efficiency despite injuries to Patrick Surtain II, Talanoa Hufanga, and Riley Moss. The unit is led by Zach Allen and Nik Bonitto, and Denver has recorded multiple sacks in 20 consecutive home games, the fourth-longest such streak in NFL history.
The Broncos' offensive confidence appears to have returned following a 62-yard touchdown run by Nix against the Cardinals. Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton noted that Denver has improved its commitment to the running game. “Yeah, obviously I think that they’re rolling,
