Marilyn Hampton, a retired custodian who worked for 39 years in the Aubrey Independent School District, learned in October that a new elementary school will bear her name. The district’s governing board announced the decision at a meeting on October 21, a move that quickly spread across social media platforms dedicated to positive news stories.

Hampton joined the district’s staff long before her retirement in 2022. While her official role involved custodial duties, district officials noted that she frequently went beyond those responsibilities. She helped students with their classwork, purchased and delivered school supplies to children who needed them, and worked the ticket booth at football games. Superintendent Shannon Saylor stated that thousands of students, teachers, and staff members looked to Hampton for inspiration during her tenure.

The district invited Hampton to the October board meeting under the pretense of discussing a specific school-related issue. During the session, Saylor asked Hampton to unroll a red carpet. Navy blue letters on the fabric read: “Marilyn Hampton Elementary School.” The building is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in August.

Saylor described Hampton as an educator in every meaningful sense, despite her lack of a formal teaching title. Hampton, visibly emotional, told the room that she was not expecting the gesture. “Y’all are too good,” she said, covering her mouth before adding, “I love all of y’all, always miss y’all.”

After composing herself, Hampton looked at a monitor displaying a computer-generated rendering of the school with her name on the sign. She joked that they better keep it clean, a comment that drew laughter from the audience.

In a later interview with WFAA, Hampton wore a T-shirt promoting the new school. She noted that she was the only one of her eight siblings to graduate high school. She said she had once felt like a failure for not attending college but eventually became very happy with how her life turned out. Hampton said, “God put you where you are supposed to be.”
