Santa Ana College secured the top spot in Orange County for community colleges in the 2027 Niche rankings. The institution placed 11th out of 101 ranked colleges in California. Nationally, the college ranked 44th among 732 institutions. Niche assigned the school an overall B+ grade. The ranking system analyzes data from the U.S. Department of Education alongside student and alumni reviews.

The college opened its doors to 26 students and 11 faculty members during the presidency of Woodrow Wilson. It operated from the campus of Santa Ana High School at the time. The institution has grown to become California’s second-largest community college. It now serves nearly 50,000 credit and noncredit students. The curriculum includes 273 degrees and certificates in credit programs. The college offers 28 associate degrees for transfer. It currently has three bachelor’s degree programs, with two more scheduled to launch by 2028.

Dr. Annebelle Nery, president of Santa Ana College, stated that the recognition belongs to the students, faculty, and staff. She described their commitment to excellence and student success as the driving force behind the institution. Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Jeffrey Lamb said the ranking was not a surprise. He noted that the college has operated for more than 110 years while continuously adapting its programs. Lamb explained that the college grows academic programs to meet the needs of transfer partners and industry partners.

Lamb identified several factors that distinguish the college. These include a large fully online degree program and diverse course offerings. Faculty members must complete 120 hours of training to teach online classes. This training ensures instructors know how to create interactive and engaging courses. The college offers a blend of programs including adult education, career technical certificates, and traditional transfer degrees. Specific areas of study include criminal justice, fire academy, nursing, and paralegal studies.

Affordability plays a central role in the college’s strategy. SAC accepts 100% of applicants. Approximately 80% of students from local high schools attend for free. Other students qualify for financial aid such as Pell Grants. The college also maintains a foundation that provides scholarships. Lamb said financial barriers can be a major obstacle for students. The college aims to keep the price of entry low. It offers classes that other colleges might cancel due to low enrollment.

Anthony Rivera, president of the Associated Student Government, said the ranking reflects the college’s support for students. He cited financial aid, grants, scholarships, and textbook vouchers as key components. Rivera praised the faculty and administration for advocating for student success. He pointed to specific initiatives such as Transfer Awareness Week and an Undocumented Student Success Week. The college also maintains a 24/7 support line. Rivera told prospective students that their voice matters at the institution.

Niche.com reviews highlighted the availability of resources for students. One reviewer noted that the college provides support for food and health needs. The reviewer also mentioned that staff and students helped them develop as a person. The ranking factors included academics, value, faculty, diversity, campus quality, safety, and student life. The college serves students in ESL, citizenship, and high school diploma programs. It also offers a certified nursing assistant program.

The college continues to seek opportunities to serve the community. It maintains transfer programs, career education programs, adult education programs, and noncredit programs. Lamb emphasized the importance of support services that help students stay enrolled. He stated that opening the door is not enough. The college must provide the supports necessary for students to stay and learn. The institution remains focused on removing barriers to education.

Santa Ana College serves as a model for community colleges in the region. It balances traditional education with modern online delivery. The college offers a wide range of academic pathways. From high school diplomas to bachelor’s degrees, the institution covers multiple educational stages. The No. 1 ranking in Orange County reflects its scale and support systems. The college’s growth from 26 students to 50,000 illustrates its expansion. It continues to adapt its offerings to meet local industry and transfer needs.
